By Mauro Libi.- Laissez-faire
is a French expression that can be translated to "let’s do it" or
"let it go". In the business field, leadership is used to define leaders
who give an autonomy high level to the members of their team. It is a very
efficient leadership style in teams composed of members with a great
professional experience and an autonomy high level.
Leader has a passive role, since the
workers or the group are those who have the power.
Collaborators have
operational and decision-making independence, as leaders on workers to set
goals, and most employees can make important decisions. It doesn’t judge or
value the contributions of its employees and that they have total freedom and they
will have the support of the leader only, if they ask for it. This type of
leadership can work when the people who are part of our company have a certain
age, a perfect knowledge of the operation of the business and its functions.
A basic characteristic of leadership is laissez-faire. It is that employees are
not responsible for making their own decisions and even the leader can be
influenced by their opinions or personal interests. Their participation in
implementing new work techniques is limited and only provides more information
about the group of applicants, for example, in the development of a successful
project.
On the other hand, one of the risks that
companies can face with this type of leadership is, that it adopts a
paternalistic attitude of a permissive nature, also their lack of evaluation
and opinion about the contributions of their collaborators that can be leaded
to the objectives being dispersed at the same time as the tasks. Faced with
this situation, if there is no other model of influential leadership, the group
is expected to be at risk of drifting.
It imposes nothing and its intervention is
very scarce. This leadership model openly let every person do the responsibilities
that they do at their own discretion. Employees have a high degree of
independence to work and are free to apply their own methodologies to achieve
success.
